Meditation

Dr. Bresnan teaches a form of vipassana, or insight meditation, known as Mahasati Insight meditation. Mahasati Insight meditation, which originates from Southeast Asia, cultivates self-awareness and mindfulness through attention to the movement of the body and, at intermediate and more advanced levels, to the movement of the mind. This ultimately leads to a direct and profound understanding of the origins of suffering in human experience and points the way toward ultimate liberation. While Mahasati meditation has its roots in Buddhism, it is not necessary to accept any type of religious doctrine in order to practice.

“Mahasati Insight meditation cultivates self-awareness and mindfulness through attention to the movement of the body and to the movement of the mind in the present moment”

Dr. Bresnan has been practicing Mahasati meditation for over 20 years with Thai meditation master Achan Da Nilpant, as well as masters Achan Thong Abhakaro and Achan Niphen Nontamart. He is the founder of the Redding Center for Mindfulness & Meditation in Connecticut, also known as Wat Sati-Ma, which is both a Thai monastic center and Western lay practice center dedicated to the teaching of Mahasati meditation.

Dr. Bresnan has also founded the Mahasati Insight Meditation Association, a nonprofit organization for the practice and teaching of Mahasati Insight meditation on the North Shore. You can visit this organization at MahasatiMeditation.org.
