Dr. Michael Bresnan is a trained therapist, and licensed psychologist in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York. He earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from New York University, and has also trained at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in New York City. In the course of his psychological training and career, Dr. Bresnan has worked with individuals across the lifespan struggling with a wide range of issues.
Dr. Bresnan has a longstanding interest in the practice of meditation. In particular, he views the cultivation of mindfulness, or attention to present moment experience, as playing an important part in the reduction of suffering and in learning to live life in a skillful way. He has practiced formal insight meditation himself for over twenty years in the Thai Theravada tradition, and is a founder of the Mahasati Association, founder and President of the Redding Center for Mindfulness & Meditation in Connecticut, and founder and Director of the Mahsati Insight Meditation Association – all nonprofit organizations dedicated to the teaching of Vipasana or insight meditation in the local community.
In addition to teaching traditional insight meditation, Dr. Bresnan also leads Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) workshops. He has received training in MBSR at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and has led college and community-based mindfulness workshops since 2008.
